Preparations have now commenced for the Armed Forces Day 2010 celebrations; these will take place over the weekend of Saturday June 26th and Sunday 27th June 2010.
It is proposed an all day open air event will take place on Saturday during the day at the recreation field opposite the South Hill Park Mansion. This will be followed by a show of appreciation at the Wilde Theatre in South Park in the evening. Sunday will see dedicated church services and a Gala Lunch. The chairperson of the Bracknell Armed Forces Day Committee (BAFD 2010), Cllr Chas Bailey said ‘Following the successful event in June this year, we hope that the new venue will allow a more spectacular celebration. The theme of the 2010 event will be not only celebrating the Armed Forces Past, Present and Future, but celebration the 150th Anniversary of the Cadet Forces (Cadet150), for which the HM Queen is Patron’ The highlights of the ‘free’ Saturday day event, which starts at 10am and runs through until 5.30pm, will be a parade of services veterans, current servicemen and women and young cadets. Leading the parade will be one of our country’s finest marching bands. The recreation field opposite the Mansion at South Hill Park will also host a proposed number of stalls and information stands, displays by local cadet groups (ATC, ACF, SCC, and CCF) and some military vehicles (Current and Vintage), which will prove popular with younger visitors. Then following the ‘free’ event a dedicated production will take place in the Wilde Theatre at South Hill Park, where there will be a special performance showing appreciation to the Armed Forces, ticket costs and details to follow shortly. To complete the weekend during Sunday morning of June 27th 2010, it is proposed that church services will support the themes locally. These will be followed by an afternoon Gala Lunch, details of venue and costs to be confirmed. The event will take much planning over the months leading to the event and is sponsored by Bracknell Town Council, Bracknell Forest Council, Bracknell Regeneration Partnership, the Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association and The Royal Air Force Association. Miss Emily Bidwell, Event Coordinator and local resident added, ‘I am confident that the combined experience of the BAFD 2010 committee, coupled with the support of local residents and businesses that the BAFD 2010 event on June 26th 2010 will be an unforgettable experience for all’ As the event is much larger and somewhat more complex, a call to arms is required. The BAFD 2010 Committee are requesting a call to arms for the following: • Volunteers to assist as stewards for the June 26th event • Local Groups and Organisations that wish contribute to the celebrations, on the themes Armed Forces Past, Present and Future, by celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Cadet Forces’ • Ex service personnel that wish to be presented with their Veterans Lapel Badge during the celebration on June 26th 2010 "We hope lots of residents will support the day by coming along to the planned event to cheer former services personnel being presented with their veterans' badges."
